Frequently asked questions

Long ago, the giants of Iceland grew envious of the Faroe Islands. They saw the rugged beauty of the land and decided they wanted to claim it for themselves.

To accomplish this, they sent Risin (the Giant) and Kellingin (the Witch) to steal the islands and bring them back to Iceland.

Upon arriving at the Faroe Islands, the giant remained in the sea while the witch climbed up the towering cliffs of Eiðiskollur. Using a heavy rope, she attempted to tie the islands together so they could be dragged across the ocean.

However, as she pulled, the northern part of the mountain split, making it impossible to move the land. The two struggled through the night, desperately trying to shift the islands, but the base of the mountain held firm.

They were so focused on their task that they lost track of time. As dawn broke, the first rays of sunlight touched them - and, as all giants and witches know, sunlight turns them to stone.

Frozen in place, Risin & Kellingin have stood there ever since, gazing longingly toward Iceland, forever trapped in the waters off Eysturoy.

Local geologists predict that Kellingin, who stands on two legs, may collapse into the sea within the next few decades due to the harsh Faroese weather.
